Week 2…15/9/13-21/9/13

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and got a chance to relax and get crafty. It is sometimes hard to find time to yourself during the week and it is so important to just take-5 and catch up on some R&R in your hopefully quiet weekends.

Classes continued in our second week with free motion quilting and amigurumi being my personal favorites.

Keep an eye on our schedule as I add more classes in the coming weeks. Especially since the task of preparing our Paper Room is now complete! We had a huge collection of paper crafting tools and materials to tidy into our shelf storage. It took a while, mostly because I spent a lot of time stopping and going “Oooo…pretty!!”. The following is merely the tip of the iceberg. Have a look…

Quilling, making albums, playing with the Cricut machine and Big-Shot, stamping, embossing, making cards, book binding and much, much more to happen in this space. What is your dream paper project?

UPDATE – 23/9/13: I have been taking a lot of excited messages asking me about our scrapbook shop. I understand the excitement but need to clarify that although we provide everything you need to complete a paper craft project as part of the classes we offer we are not currently selling tools or materials individually. Stay tuned for more updates as we work towards finding or sourcing scrappy stuff here in Qatar.

Apart from this I have to say that the highlight of our second week was featuring in the Qatar tribune! (Read the article here)

Art Elements

19092013294

I got a moment on Thursday night for a brief visit to Art Elements, the recently opened art and craft supply shop in The Gate Mall. I had heard all about it, checked out their Facebook page and had high hopes for this new shop. I was not disappointed!

There are a lot of things working in their favor.  They are very well stocked with a diverse range of media for many art and craft projects. From drawing and painting on different surfaces – textile, ceramic, glass, canvas and paper – to decoupage, marbling and clay work. They have a great stock of canvas in different sizes and shapes, brushes, spray paints, gold leaf…the list goes on. What I like best is that in any product they seem to have the full range of colours available. The products are good quality and seem to be well priced.

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves but I can say that it is well worth a visit. I look forward to seeing how this shop develops.

The Gate Mall is opposite City Centre and next to Salem Plaza. See the map below:

They are on the second level in the mall. Give them a call on 4407 7174 if you have any questions about their stock.

So, you need another reason to go and visit?! Okay – Art Elements are right beside these super cool jelly fish! One of the coolest decorations I have seen in a Doha mall yet.

Week 1

A lot of hard work and planning has paid off in what has been a great first week here at Inspiration Station. It all started on Saturday 7th September with our open day craft market. It was so exciting to see such creative talent all under one roof. We had vendors selling their handmade items, from crochet toys, kids clothes, paintings, jewelry, bookmarks, photography, furniture and so much more. A huge thank you to everyone who got involved. It was lovely to meet all the vendors and see connections being made between such talented individuals. And thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. I hope you all enjoyed the market and all of your purchases!

The market was such a success that we will definitely be looking at hosting more events like this in the future. If you are someone who would like to sell at a market like this please email us your details and we will add you to our mailing list for this in the future.

Classes began on the Sunday and throughout this week some wonderful work has been produced. I hope all of our first students have had a good time!

Remember to keep an eye on our class schedule for upcoming classes. Also, if you have something you particularly want to learn or make then let us know. We are happy to look at scheduling a session with your request in mind.

So all in all we have been settling into the new space and things are looking really good.

Our paper room is still under construction. There is a huge (and very exciting) collection of stamps and punches and papers and stickers and gadgets and stencils and…and…so many lovely things to tidy into shelves ready for you to play with! So look out for the unveiling of this room soon!

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. Bring on week 2!!

How To: Tissue Paper Flowers

You will need:

Scissors
Tissue paper
A little bit of tape to finish them off
To make one flower you need two coloured strips each measuring 10 cm x 75cm. The size of the strips will influence the size of the flower petals so feel free to play around with the measurements for more variety. Mix and match the colours between flowers.

Start by rolling up one strip of the tissue. The first roll will be your flower colour. Don’t roll it too tight…you want to be able to fit your pinky finger inside for a good size.

Leave a tail about 7-8cm at the end.

Line up the next strip of tissue (your leaf colour) so that it can be wound onto the roll.

Roll them together so that you have one colour on the outside and another on the inside.

Flatten two thirds of the tube and make a cut at the base of this going across the tube.

(My example looks more like half way but I intended to have the flattened section showing on the right…see?)

The cut should come pretty close to the edge but be careful not to cut all the way through.

On the flattened section cut a curved line from the top edge/corner round to the first cut. You are cutting through many layers of tissue which can be pretty hard going. Be careful not the cut through the narrow area that is created by the first cut.

When this section is folded open it will create a petal/leaf shape.

There will be a few petals/leaves that alternate in colour in the middle of your ‘stack’.  Also there will may be some that are cut in half. Pluck them out!

Fold down the leaf colour. You can trim the end to create a point and make a serrated edge. The leaf shape is up to you so experiment!

The same goes for the petal. Here I have rounded it out.

Roll the petals around a pen. Please note that this is a Jumbo Sharpie pen and it’s not that I have freakishly small hands!

Pinch the edges of the petals as they are around the pen.

You should end up with something that looks like this…now for the über fun part!!

By holding the base as shown in the picture and then pulling at the first petal carefully extend the tube to make THIS!

By gently winding the tube tighter the leaves and petals will create a spiral. This is the tricky part. You want to make sure the tube ‘tension’ stays even.

Once you have created a cool spiral you need to push the top back down to its original position…only this time all the leaves and petals are beautifully arranged to create a flower. This part is maybe the hardest bit. Do it slowly taking your time. You may need to adjust the tightness of the tube to allow it to squash down easier.

Once you are done a little sticky tape at the base will hold everything together.

That was fun right?

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. If you make anything exciting with your flowers (headdress, flower arrangement, garland, parade float!) I would LOVE to see pictures of your creations!

Paint

jotun2Hello all! I am happy to report that plenty of planning and progress is being made here at Inspiration Station. Lots of important decisions are being made, for example – colour schemes. Soon we will be heading to our local Jotuns to start choosing colors for our wonderful walls. The space we will soon occupy, 4 main rooms, needs a revamp. Time to paint!

Useful advice for choosing wall colors

Colouring walls is an exciting but sometimes daunting task. Where do you start?! Here are some tips and advice when considering colours for wall decoration.

  1. Inspiration – Start looking for ideas! Colour inspiration can come from so many sources – looking at objects that are special to you, artworks that catch your eye, outfits that you think look fab, furniture you love and more. Flick through magazines and books and try to identify what you like about certain color schemes. Is it the mood the colours invoke? Is it the space the colours create? You can even try colour scheme generators like this one.
  2. Lighting – Colours can change dramatically depending on the effects of light, either natural light at different times of the day or the bulb type and wattage you have in the room. Light and shadow can alter the shades and tones of a colour giving it a very different look. Before committing to a decision test your colour choice by observing it under different light conditions.
  3. Flooring – Do you have hard floors or carpeting? Your floor treatment can influence your wall colours too, and not just because of their hue. Where carpets absorb light and colour, creating a cozy atmosphere, hard floors tend to reflect even if the flooring is dark.
  4. Room structure – Look at the size of the room, the height of your ceilings, the size of your windows and the details of wood trims and architrave. All of these elements will influence your colour choices – bigger windows allow you to consider darker tones, higher ceilings suggest lighter colours etc.
  5. Paint Quality – Remember, you get what you pay for and better quality paints will give you better quality pigment.
  6. Flawless – Use colour to hide flaws or awkward spaces in a room. Do this by limiting your range of colours to a minimum – work within shades of the same colour.
  7. Size matters – Generally the smaller the space the lighter your colour choice should be. This is especially true in bathrooms.
  8. Room by room – Keep living areas lighter in tones for a more relaxed and comfortable space. Let your personality show in the bedroom. Realise that wall colour choice in the kitchen is generally dominated by other colours such as the whiteware and benchtops. Use the guest room as an experimental zone to test out ideas without major consequence. Have fun with kids rooms by painting chalkboard walls, murals, using vinyl stickers and painting the ceiling! Have even more fun in the hallway, a space you spend little time!
  9. Moody – Dark colours create intimacy, cool colors create calm, yellows and cremes help to create warmth and comfort. Colour creates mood so get in tune with what you want a room to feel like.
  10. Be bold – Don’t be afraid of using bolder colours (but if you are feeling timid perhaps limit them to a feature wall).

Inspiration is coming to town

What is Inspiration Station?

The short answer to this is we are an art and craft school located just behind the Al Waab (also known as Teyseer) petrol station in Doha, Qatar. But really, we are so much more!

We are a club of crafters, a getaway from the day-to-day, a relaxing retreat, a pit stop, a creative oasis, a family of makers, a partnership, a haven of hoarders, a posse of creatives, a community – the list goes on…

Who is Inspiration Station?

Louise and Mel are two crafty individuals.

Louise is owner and operator of CESK, the longest established Pre-school in Qatar, enjoying over 20 years of continued service. She is hands on and loves hand-made. Her love affair with crafty gadgets knows no bounds and she sometimes needs to be forcibly restrained from acquiring more.

Mel loves to make stuff. Trained in Fine Arts she worked as Head of Secondary Art and Design at an international school in Doha since 2007. She always has a sewing, illustration, graphic design, sculpture, photography, painting and/or crafting project on the go. Creativity is messy and Mel is a very messy person!

We formed Inspiration Station with an awareness of Qatar’s talented and booming community of creatives. We aim to provide these people with somewhere to meet up and make amazing things. We also recognise the demand, by those not already hooked into creating, for classes that encourage getting hands and minds busy.

Our Aims

Creativity is contagious and we want to pass it on! Whether you are an absolute beginner or an experienced crafter, Inspiration Station aims to provide you with the fuel to create amazing things.

Types of Fuel:

IdeasIdeas – Don’t know where to get started? Feeling uninspired? Then come to us for a dose of inspiration. The seed of a new idea can come from so many sources – from learning a new technique, discovering a new material, browsing books and magazines, talking with others and sharing projects. We want to help you come up with the big ideas.

SkillsSkills and Information– If you need to learn the basics, are wanting to brush up on what you already know or are looking to extend yourself in a new direction we will teach you the skills. We also want to share important and sometimes hard to find information. Where do you buy good quality fabrics here in Qatar? Who are some of the best quality paint and canvas suppliers? What screen printing equipment can you get your hands on in Doha? We will let you know!

ToolsTools and resources – You may just be getting started in your interest in sewing, paper crafting, painting or more and aren’t willing or able to invest in all of the equipment. You may have just arrived in Qatar and had to leave a lot of your ‘toys’ behind. Whatever your situation we want to make life (and creating) easy for you and will provide all of the tools and equipment you need.

Space and TimeTime and space – The thing every crafter and artist can’t get enough of! Dedicated time without interruption and the space to spread out and get creative. These can sometimes be in short supply – not at Inspiration Station. We have four spaces for your use: Our sewing room with six fully equipped work stations, paper crafting room with gadgets galore, wet room for messy work and (maybe best of all) ‘The Cozy Room’ for serious R&R with your latest project or just a magazine and a hot cup of coffee.

SocialSocialising – Come meet and make friends with like-minded people who share your interests. Great ideas don’t happen in a vaccum so let the creative juices flow alongside good conversation, either over a sewing machine, die cutter, easel or coffee table. After all, sharing is caring.
