The Singer Shop

Here is another must know shop location if you are not familiar already. The Singer shop…yey!

DSCN4449

It does not have a tag on Google maps but the Al Badie Music shop does, which is next door on the same corner of the roundabout.

As well as selling and servicing a range of Singer sewing machine models they also sell a variety of sewing notions such as pins, needles, scissors, interfacing, buttons, zips and such.

Notably they have a good stock of knitting and crochet supplies. A full selection of needles in different sizes and a reasonable stock of wool choices.

They also have a good selection of DMC cotton for 3QR a skein. They also have embroidery aida in different sizes.

And if I haven’t sold them as a great go to then you have to visit for their felt. They reliably (up until now anyway) have a nice selection of felt that you can buy for around 20-25qr a meter depending on who you talk to.

Hope you get to visit them soon 🙂

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Today – a crochet pattern, just for you. Enjoy!

ninja scarf 1
I made this scarf for my child-of-the-80’s husband! Turtle power!!

ninja scarf

I have Louise to credit for this idea. I developed this TMNT pattern from the Skull Scarf kits I put together for our halloween bazaar. Lou poked fun at one attempt saying it looked more like a ninja turtle than a skull. “Oooo!” I thought, “Good idea!!”.

The original skull pattern I was inspired by came from Yella. With a bit of tweaking and experimentation I think I have come up with something fun, easy and “totally gnarly, dude!”. I really encourage people to try adapting and customising crochet patterns as you learn so much from the experience. It is not as difficult as you might think! As you begin to understand the different crochet stitches and try different designs challenge yourself (and your confidence) with some improv crochet.

So, without further ado…the pattern! (First pattern I’ve even written so if there are any suggestions on how to make it better then let me know!!)

Instructions

Step 1: Eyes (RED for Raphael, ORANGE for Michelangelo, BLUE for Leonardo and PURPLE for Donatello)

ch12 and slip st into first ch to make a foundation ring.

ch12 again and slip st into first ch of this round to make a second foundation ring (like a figure 8).

sc6 into first ring, ch5 and slip st back 4, sc1 into the ring, ch5 and slip back 4,  sc7 into the ring.

sc14 into second ring and slip st to finish.

Step 2: Forehead (GREEN)

Finding the first stitch is hard to describe…I hope this makes sense.

sc in 6th st from the last slip st in ‘the centre’.

Work along the row – sc2, hdc2, dc2, hdc2, sc3 to make 12st in this row. Turn work.

*sc in 1st st from hook. sc1 into each st except the last one. Turn work.*

repeat to make 5 rows with the final row being 8st. Slip st to finish.

Step 3: Mouth (GREEN)

Row 1 – sc in 6th st from ‘the centre’. sc1 in each st to make 12st. Turn work.

Row 2 – sc in 1st st from hook. Work along the row – sc2, hdc2, dc2, hdc2, sc3. (12st total)

Row 3 – ch6. sc into 5th st in row2. sc3 more into the row. ch6. Slip st into last st of row 2. Turn work

Row 4 – sc10 into the ring that has been made by row 3. sc4 into 4st of row 3 shown in bold. sc10 into the next ring. Slip st into first st of row 2 to finish.

Step 4: Joining

To join the heads together to make a scarf simply create 5 rows (or more if you like) of 8st from the top of the head then either join using slip st to the chin of the next turtle head or whip stitch using needle and matching yarn. I used a light brown much like the turtles chest color.

Other ideas for joining:

Making coloured stripes based on their mask colours.

Grey circles like manhole covers

Pizza slices

Week 2…15/9/13-21/9/13

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and got a chance to relax and get crafty. It is sometimes hard to find time to yourself during the week and it is so important to just take-5 and catch up on some R&R in your hopefully quiet weekends.

Classes continued in our second week with free motion quilting and amigurumi being my personal favorites.

Keep an eye on our schedule as I add more classes in the coming weeks. Especially since the task of preparing our Paper Room is now complete! We had a huge collection of paper crafting tools and materials to tidy into our shelf storage. It took a while, mostly because I spent a lot of time stopping and going “Oooo…pretty!!”. The following is merely the tip of the iceberg. Have a look…

Quilling, making albums, playing with the Cricut machine and Big-Shot, stamping, embossing, making cards, book binding and much, much more to happen in this space. What is your dream paper project?

UPDATE – 23/9/13: I have been taking a lot of excited messages asking me about our scrapbook shop. I understand the excitement but need to clarify that although we provide everything you need to complete a paper craft project as part of the classes we offer we are not currently selling tools or materials individually. Stay tuned for more updates as we work towards finding or sourcing scrappy stuff here in Qatar.

Apart from this I have to say that the highlight of our second week was featuring in the Qatar tribune! (Read the article here)

Week 1

A lot of hard work and planning has paid off in what has been a great first week here at Inspiration Station. It all started on Saturday 7th September with our open day craft market. It was so exciting to see such creative talent all under one roof. We had vendors selling their handmade items, from crochet toys, kids clothes, paintings, jewelry, bookmarks, photography, furniture and so much more. A huge thank you to everyone who got involved. It was lovely to meet all the vendors and see connections being made between such talented individuals. And thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. I hope you all enjoyed the market and all of your purchases!

The market was such a success that we will definitely be looking at hosting more events like this in the future. If you are someone who would like to sell at a market like this please email us your details and we will add you to our mailing list for this in the future.

Classes began on the Sunday and throughout this week some wonderful work has been produced. I hope all of our first students have had a good time!

Remember to keep an eye on our class schedule for upcoming classes. Also, if you have something you particularly want to learn or make then let us know. We are happy to look at scheduling a session with your request in mind.

So all in all we have been settling into the new space and things are looking really good.

Our paper room is still under construction. There is a huge (and very exciting) collection of stamps and punches and papers and stickers and gadgets and stencils and…and…so many lovely things to tidy into shelves ready for you to play with! So look out for the unveiling of this room soon!

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. Bring on week 2!!

Inspiration is coming to town

What is Inspiration Station?

The short answer to this is we are an art and craft school located just behind the Al Waab (also known as Teyseer) petrol station in Doha, Qatar. But really, we are so much more!

We are a club of crafters, a getaway from the day-to-day, a relaxing retreat, a pit stop, a creative oasis, a family of makers, a partnership, a haven of hoarders, a posse of creatives, a community – the list goes on…

Who is Inspiration Station?

Louise and Mel are two crafty individuals.

Louise is owner and operator of CESK, the longest established Pre-school in Qatar, enjoying over 20 years of continued service. She is hands on and loves hand-made. Her love affair with crafty gadgets knows no bounds and she sometimes needs to be forcibly restrained from acquiring more.

Mel loves to make stuff. Trained in Fine Arts she worked as Head of Secondary Art and Design at an international school in Doha since 2007. She always has a sewing, illustration, graphic design, sculpture, photography, painting and/or crafting project on the go. Creativity is messy and Mel is a very messy person!

We formed Inspiration Station with an awareness of Qatar’s talented and booming community of creatives. We aim to provide these people with somewhere to meet up and make amazing things. We also recognise the demand, by those not already hooked into creating, for classes that encourage getting hands and minds busy.

Our Aims

Creativity is contagious and we want to pass it on! Whether you are an absolute beginner or an experienced crafter, Inspiration Station aims to provide you with the fuel to create amazing things.

Types of Fuel:

IdeasIdeas – Don’t know where to get started? Feeling uninspired? Then come to us for a dose of inspiration. The seed of a new idea can come from so many sources – from learning a new technique, discovering a new material, browsing books and magazines, talking with others and sharing projects. We want to help you come up with the big ideas.

SkillsSkills and Information– If you need to learn the basics, are wanting to brush up on what you already know or are looking to extend yourself in a new direction we will teach you the skills. We also want to share important and sometimes hard to find information. Where do you buy good quality fabrics here in Qatar? Who are some of the best quality paint and canvas suppliers? What screen printing equipment can you get your hands on in Doha? We will let you know!

ToolsTools and resources – You may just be getting started in your interest in sewing, paper crafting, painting or more and aren’t willing or able to invest in all of the equipment. You may have just arrived in Qatar and had to leave a lot of your ‘toys’ behind. Whatever your situation we want to make life (and creating) easy for you and will provide all of the tools and equipment you need.

Space and TimeTime and space – The thing every crafter and artist can’t get enough of! Dedicated time without interruption and the space to spread out and get creative. These can sometimes be in short supply – not at Inspiration Station. We have four spaces for your use: Our sewing room with six fully equipped work stations, paper crafting room with gadgets galore, wet room for messy work and (maybe best of all) ‘The Cozy Room’ for serious R&R with your latest project or just a magazine and a hot cup of coffee.

SocialSocialising – Come meet and make friends with like-minded people who share your interests. Great ideas don’t happen in a vaccum so let the creative juices flow alongside good conversation, either over a sewing machine, die cutter, easel or coffee table. After all, sharing is caring.
